If you want something really reliable,you might use CAN: chips are available, codes are ready, all the possible descriptions exist and it is fashionable. There are even some 8051 controllers with CAN hardware inside. The price is affordable. And it gives you an immense possibility to develop your net in future to use it in almost any imaginable application.
