Seconded! Anything besides probes is an improvement.

We have found that the capacitive method has problems too ("probes" external to the tank) if the liquid inside isn't clean water...any build up of salts on the inside corrupts the readings.

Usability of ultrasonic methods depends on tank dimensions. Shorter tanks pose problems.

What works nicely is a simple pressure sensor at the bottom of the tank.
