I think that should be VI* where (*) indicates I conjugate.
So, the current has a complex component (phase) associated with it and it is not a simple matter of VI. I haven't done power calculations for a very long time but I think I remember that VI in an AC system is the apparent power.
I might consult an old text book to be certain.
