I was wondering why the free-wheeling diode is not suggested across the speaker coil (to counter back emf when coil is turned off) ??

Aman,
The CIRCUIT of a speaker coil may look like a relay, but they don't behave in the same way, since the coil is MOVING in the magnetic field and dissipating energy to the air. Essentially that puts a low-ish value resistive shunt across the coil. The inductance of a speaker coil is usually very low, because there is a substantial reluctance around the magnetic circuit. In a relay coil at release, the magnetic circuit is complete, the coil unsaturated, and the inductance very high. Hence the free-wheel diode.

Secondly, I saw one of the postings (sorry I closed the browser window and forgot its URL) that suggested connecting a capacitor b/w port pin and speaker coil terminal.

The capacitor is there for DC blocking, to protect the speaker.
