#63823 - Narrow DIL28 instead of Wide DIL28... Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Hallo Paul,
I was at jameco.com and had a look at SRAM available there: I think, you have the wrong chip! What you have bought is a 'fast' 8kx8 SRAM with access time of about 20nsec. These chips are fabricated in 'narrow DIL28' pckage, means, both rows of pins are separated 300 mil = 0.3 inch = 7.62 mm. 'Fast' SRAMs are used with CACHE applications and such stuff. What you need is a 'slow' 8kx8 SRAM with access time of about 100...200nsec. These chips are fabricated in 'wide DIL28', or simply 'DIL28' package. With 'wide DIL28' package, both rows are 600 mil = 0.6 inch = 15.24 mm distanced. 0.1 inch = 2.54 mm is the distance from pin to pin in same row, which is identical for 'wide' and 'narrow' DIL packages. To use 'fast' 8kx8 SRAM in combination with ZIF socket is not a good idea, for following reasons: 1. 'Fast' SRAM introduces a much higher supply current. 2. Some ZIF-socket are much bigger than normal socket, may be this makes trouble with PCB. 3. 'Fast' SRAM are very fast and need special care in terms of decoupling and signal routing. PCB designs, which neglect solid ground plane, can highly suffer from ground bounce, etc. So, if I were you, I would buy the 'slow' SRAM and omit the experiment with ZIF. Good luck, Kai |
