OK, now I understand your use of "higher performance" and I agree with you.

Even with some tight assembler code to handle the menu, assuming it fits, I think I'd rather go with a derivative with more code space. Going into the debug phase of project development with so little room for change is a little too scary.

Leaving the user interface/menus for last in my opinion isn't wise. I prefer to build the user interface first and hang on the functional code as it's developed, which makes debug easier.
