you want to use the high power of the laser to control appliances at larger distances, right?

the problem is since the laser have a coherent waveform you must point the emitter light *exactly* over the receiver. Quite a feat with a handheld controller at 20m.

at 100m you won't even see the receiver at that distance.

as sugested, RF seems the way to go.
