No, they are not ASCII.

They are what your particular LCD happens to display for byte values 0x18 and 0x19.

And this table shows how they'd display in MS-DOS:

But in ASCII, 0x18 is the code for CAN (Cancel), and 0x19 is the code for EM (End-of-Medium) - both non-printing control codes!
