Note that you may want to research a little into smoke alarms if you have not already done so. There are now devices with a broad array of capabilities. Some are AC line powered. There are types with AC power and standby battery. The types recommended for new construction in homes are interconnected so that if one alarm goes off then all of them start to screech. In the case of these interconnected units they sometimes are interconnected by low voltage wiring and other types use a carrier current communications scheme through the AC power wiring. These interconnected types seem that they would be very interesting to investigate in terms of remote monitoring AND control. I do note from reviewing prices that I wonder just how much of the new featurism in smoke alarms is simply an attempt by manufacturers to extricate themselves from the low price $10-$12 product category.
