I hate to have to say this but the 8051 is really weak on the 8 pin side of things. The king of the hill of 8 pin Micro's is the PIC 16F508 IC. Check it out. It cost about $0.85/ea. Tons of hardware and software programmers on the Internet. It is a one time programmable device but your development can be done on a compatible reprogrammable device such as the PIC 16F84 or 16F628 (1/2 price [$2.50/ea] and twice the capabilities of 16F84).
