On second thought, use of a spring load on the cable probably won't give discrimination of the presence of an obstruction in the door path until it's too late. Why not use a retracting seal such as is on elevator doors? The seal is connected to microswitches along the door edge. When the seals meet, the microswitches are disabled since the seals have met and prevent an appendage from crossing the door path.
