I think if you look at the cost factor, for production, you will find Erik's suggestion much cheaper than the external UART. Last time I checked the standalone UARTs were as much as $3-4. The low cost LPC part is < $1. Then as you evaluate your system you will surely find some other things that a pair of processors can do better than one.
