I also thought like you, and got a lot of information from the net, I also made a metal frame to hold the LCD, the plain LCD is available here in Bangalore for around Rs.100/= These are COG (chip on glass) and the control IC (PCD8544) is mounted on the LCD glass and it has only 8 (I think) connetions. I have also devised a method for mounting the backlight leds, SMD leds in 0603 package, these Leds are available in Mumbai.

The only think which kept me from pursuing this was the question, how long will this LCD be available in the market, down the years? as new models come out these are likely to be discontinued.

Therefore I am planning to use COG displays form Tianma, this Chinese company seems to be the most popular for COG lcd displays right now.
