There is a way around it. I have a functioning (to the level of 'proof of concept') board with a 'plain vanilla' '51 and a CPLD. My (soon to be) production board has a Cyg... argh SILabs 8 port chip on it. For reasons of space, the Cygnal board is the preferred solution (the other is a sandwich), but should a problem arise I am not stuck.
