The best source of the LCD pin configuration is the datasheet. But if you don't have it and no way to get one. You can try out the configuration below, try it at your owns risk as the configuration below works with most of the HD44780 based LCDs but not for all.
for single controller LCD i.e. upto 80 character LCD's.
1.Vss - Gnd
2.Vcc - +5V
3.Vee - Cotnrast control
4. RS - Register select [ Command / Data ]
5. RW - Read / Write
6. EN - Enable pulse.
7. D0 - Data bus LSB
8. D1
........
........
14. D7 - Data bus MSB.
15 & 16 - Backlight.
