If I remember correctly the old Digital Equipment Corporation mainframes could do something like base36 for packing characters for decreased storage. Unfortunately, my memory here is sparse so this is all I can offer. As to why you would want to use it nowadays? Try Google with PDP8,PDP11 base36, etc.
