If I remember correctly the old Digital Equipment Corporation mainframes could do something like base36 for packing characters for decreased storage. Unfortunately, my memory here is sparse so this is all I can offer. As to why you would want to use it nowadays? There may have been a mention of it in a book on serial protocols by ? Campbell. The book has some good information, but the author rabbits on way too much. I think he has a firm hold of himself! |
