You will need at least 2 or 3 8574's depending if you can program a singe pin to out or input. I have done some printer interfacing in the past. If you look closely to the timing diagram of the printer port specification (must be somewhere on the internet) it should not be too dificult. Since I did this for a cumpany I worked for that day but don't work for it anymore can't I supply you with an code example.
