The typical three wire connection would be
D-Shell 25 pin Modem DTE Tx 2-------------------> Tx Rx 3-------------------> Rx RTS 4--| CTS 5--| DSR 6 | GND 7-->----------------> GND DCD 8 | DTR 20--| RI 22-------------------> if ring detection is required more 2.
