You need to determine if the problem you are having is in the sending of the data or the receiving of the data.

If you are careful, polling may work, but I would suggest you use interrupt driven comms.

As previously mentioned by one of the other respondants, why are you stuck with using 115kbaud? If 57k6 works, why not stick with that for the moment?
