Lord Krishna vanquishes the evil demon Naragasura in a deadly fight and the demon requests before dying, that this day be celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. So goes one story.. This is one occassion where people splurge in sweets, dresses and crackers like there is no tomorrow ;-)
