If you are planning to control a standard printer that you use with your PC parrallel port it can be contrlled very easily. [ Be sure its not a win printer ]. Similarly for a printer that connects to a PC COM port. Actually, that's PCL - and it's also used by LaserJets, not just ink jets. In fact, many non-HP printers also emulate PCL. There's also HPGL - the plotter language; some printers accept this direct. Some printers accept PostScript. Note that all printers are different - if you want to support multiple printers, you will need some way to configure your choice.
