The caption mentions "the Fortran language".
Now firstly, FORTRAN wasn't spelt "Fortran" until 1990 (Fortran 90). Before that, it was always written in all upper case. Secondly, work on FORTRAN only started in 1954 and wasn't completed until 1957. Also, FORTRAN was developed by IBM, at the same time that RAND was working on a HLL of their own. So the chances of the RAND Corp. endorsing FORTRAN at that time can be considered slim. Rob. |
