Is this a soldering iron with a small tip? The trick to soldering SMD ic's is to use flux gel - this makes it hard to the solder to bridge the pins (although it does somestimes). I just use a normal soldering tip and wipe the solder ball across the pins - get the technique right and you do it in one pass.
