For starters, you will want to download and read the CAN specification. Next you will want to pick a CAN controller. An 8051 with a built-in CAN controller is convenient. I've been using Atmel's AT89C51CC03. Atmel have some others as well, as do other chip vendors. Most of the new chips support ISP, so you probably won't need your programmer. After you've read the chip datasheet too, you are ready to start looking at the example code available out there. Atmel has some. (And you'll need it, as Atmel's datasheet is not an example of a well-written datasheet.) Then you'll be ready to work on your own project.
