The link below will allow you to access a very nice applications guide about opto couplers from California Eastern Laboratories. This guide was where, some years ago, I learned of the performance enhancement that can be seen using smaller load resistances in the emitter side of the opto coupler. (Note that there are a couple of figures in the app note that show a 5 ohm resistor which should show as 5K as noted in the text).
