True - provided the modem supports it.
I think almost any standalone modem would support it (probably also other compression schemes), but not sure sure about embedded modems or "bare" chipsets.

Also, the achivieable compression depends upon the nature of the data being transferred.

True - I was being simplistic.
It's the modulation scheme that counts (V.whatever), rather than the specific modem model!

But, again, it is possible to buy embedded modem modules/chips that "only" go up to V.22 - these could be considered as "slow" modems!
