What I like to do with unknown PC com ports is take one of those DIP jumpers (like the kind you use to select master/slave on a hard drive) and pop it over pins 2 and 3 at the end of the serial cable. Then I open up the COM program (I like TeraTerm, but whatever) type on the PC keyboard and you should see waht you are typing echoed back onto the screen. If that doesn't work, you need to sort the PC end first before looking at the 8051. Also a 'scope or logic probe of some kind would help.
