I would connect it to ground. The reason is that if you do not then any noise on the ground will be present on all the metal parts of the machine and could easily be induced into sensitive parts of your circuit. If your ground is reference to the machines ground then your electronics is always at the same potential as the garbage on the metalwork so there is no induced interference.
