Re patents:
Many,many moons ago, I worked for a company with ~300 employees that basically was formed around a patent. Well one of the big guys started making products violating the patent and got sued by the company I worked for. When the case was won, every employee save 2 had been laid off, all buildings and equipment sold and the lawyers paid, End of story.
