Hey Peter,
when i can read directly the port Latch, i can check for shorts to ground. Some highside driver go to ground on overload. And you need no mirror byte in RAM to check this condition. remember when you write a 1 to a pin the output goes for 2 machines cycles with full power to VCC.After the 2 machines cycles only the pullup is working.
