You might also want to have a look at Ramon de Klein's Serial communication library for C++. I used this for my 89C4x0ldr-lite software as well as another program and have been very satisfied with it. I did, however, write a relatively thin wrapper class around one of his classes to provide a clean abstraction to some special functionality (i.e., arbitrary DTR line manipulation for interacting with the DS89C4x0 ROM loader) that requires Win32 API calls.
