Whem I worked at "enormously huge billion dollar company" many chips were Maxim. But even there, when demand exceeded forecast production, chip shortages appeared. If you tell Maxim 3 months in advance that you need 1.000.000 chips, they deliver at a price no one else can even get close to, but if you then find out that you need 1.010.000 instead, you need use second source for the 10.000.
