Hi Dan,
The company I work for uses this chip with the 80c31. Check out Intersil's website for the datasheet if you haven't done so. It is very informative and there is a Y2K+1 bug fix that you should know about. From what I've learned so far about using the chip, you have to set a bit inorder to have the clock start or stop.
