Can someone provide me information about a barcodereader i have?

It is a square black box and is marked as follows:

Microscan Systems Incorporated
Model: MS-500 FL3.5
Part No.: 99-500005-01
Manufactured Feb1990 (yes, THAT old ;) )

As far as I figured out until now, it has serial output (what format??)
and supply is 5V DC.

Is it possible to use it in conjunction with a 8051 microcontroller?
