When PALs came out engineers said they would never replace discrete logic because they were too expensive because of the wasted silicon. Discrete logic is still used, but only for the most trivial problems, as the flexibility and falling costs have made the benefit of PALs compelling for most combinatorial and state machine problems. I see fuzzy logic in an analgous way, as it makes it much easier to code and maintain complex control problems, and as a project manager this counts for a lot. Bob Pease's articles debunked a lot of the crap talked up by the fuzzy logic evangelists, and it wont replace conventional coding across the board, but it is useful. |
