I still got quite a bit of my budget left, but not enough to buy the development board. It's about R6000 which is about $100

You could try speaking very nicely to the Atmel rep that gave you the chip. If you speak very nicely, and do a good sales job on convincing them that you are a worthy cause and not just some idle freeloader, then they might find it in their hearts to give you a board.
It's worth a try...

If that fails, yes - you'll have to make one yourself.

At first i thought that it was purley an investigation into Mp3 and its fine workings and all. I've done all that work and i know alot about Mp3 now

That'll be all good stuff for your thesis but, unfortunately, probably not a lot of help in actually building a player using this chip. :-(
I think you'll find that all the MP3 stuff is hidden away within the custom hardware of the chip, and you will have very little (if anything) to do with the MP3 processing itself.

But now i'm stuck with this project, and i'll have to do my best i suppose. Cant change it now.

Such is life!

i've read the datasheets and think i might know how to start now.

The datasheet is just the start.
Reading the datasheet is necessary, but not sufficient.

You need to go back to that Atmel page I cited earlier, and go through all the other resources there.
Even if you can't get a Dev Kit, you can probably download the schematics & manuals from the Atmel site.

Also take a look at http://www.mp3project.org/

Having never done microcontrollers before, you'll probably need to look through the Turorials on this site.

You will also need to download & read the documents commonly referred to as "the bible" for the 8051:

Chapter 1 - 80C51 Family Architecture:
http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/acrobat/v...ARCH_1.pdf

Chapter 2 - 80C51 Family Programmer’s Guide and Instruction Set:
http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/acrobat/v...UIDE_1.pdf

Chapter 3 - 80C51 Family Hardware Description:
http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/acrobat/v...WARE_1.pdf

Your lecturer should be able to advise you of any other suitable resources available at your university - library books, etc.

I know that's a lot of reading, but that's what University's all about - that's why people speak of "reading" a subject at University...!

just one more question that i;m still not sure of. Do i need to program the chip to interface with an external memory source? interrupts and all that stuff.

Almost Certainly!

But start simple, and take one step at a time!
