some 80C52s can be modified (Flash/EPROM) some can not (OTP)

If you use 89C52 you should be OK; HOWEVER, why not go for an ISP chip such as the P89V51Rx2.

PS you are NOT OK re the 232 not having a ground pin.


In addition to what Erik has mentioned, use of the 80C52 also does not solve the bus contention problem between your memory and the buffers used for the switch interfaces.

Furthermore, if your microcontroller does in fact have internal program storage and you want to use it, you must tie /EA to VCC to tell the microcontroller to actually execute from it; you still have it tied to ground.
