I would tend to more agree with Erik than Andy. The number should be free of the time the player keeps the button pressed. It should be just pressed and the micro should calculate the random number at its own with some reference (like ac zero crossing) without referring to how long the player kept the button pressed.

A free running counter can be used to simulate ac line. When counter is zero take it as zero crossing. But should be a hidden counter.
