Erik I tried the connecting MISO to MOSI and nothing happens. I tried to bring MISO pin high and it does not. I think I need a pull resistor on this pin...no one has been able to answer if it is needed or not.
no pullup needed, configure MOSI as push-pull output, MISO as input. As opposed to IIC in SPI the lines are unidirectional, only with multiple masters do you need to worry about signals colliding.
