My answer to you first question is "no, I used an 8085". The choice of processor is a personal thing - you can even make a mobile robot with no processor at all! (no kidding, I've seen it done! Mine had no RAM - almost as cool!). The deal is to know what you want the thing to do, give it the necessary mechanics, then think about a controller.
