Hi Richard,
Thanks for the comments. Agreed. My cost estimates were not realistic. My rough, uneducated guess about costs in 100 units lots, is around $20 per unit. That means the retail price would need to be at least $80 or more. I have some experience with some of the items you list as I have been running a small, part-time online business for about 4 years now. I'm comfortable with packaging, inventory, order fulfillment, accounting, design documentation, marketing, project plans, engineering and QA. I have built a successful retail channel and now I want to add additional products to my line. A major responsibly of my day job involves writting requirement and design documents for multi-million dollar projects. I do similar but simplier design documents for my side projects. I intend to do one for this project but wanted to float the idea to see if it was even interesting in the least. What I don't know (as you could see instantly), is the manufacturing aspect of such a project. I'm much more of a software developer than a hardware engineer. Your comment about end user documentation hits pretty close to home. To be truthful, proper end-user documentation is the absolute weakest part of all of my projects so far. The right thing to do would be to revisit some of my old projects and work on producing high quality documentation. I'm glad I posted here. I didn't get what I expected but I got something perhaps more useful. |
