I believe I've seen a trend. Apparently some folks think that using 'C', which I don't do ... yet ... is an excuse not to study and understand the processor architecture. I know that's the case among students, who, clearly, can't see the difference between a PC and a microcontroller until it's rudely pointed out to them.

Is this what's going on here?

absolutely.

The first utterance from any so called instructor/teacher/professor in C is: "C is device independent" thus proving his/her own incompetence.
