Ethics has nothing to do with business. You can argue whether "getting inspired" by competition, or outright stealing ideas/algorithms/artwork/code is or is not ethical; but if your competitor uses it and succeeds, you are out of business and that's all (you can go the lawsuit way of course, I don't know if it helps in USA/Western Europe, here, it would be simply ridiculous). We have a saying, something like "words are for to speak but to eat you need bread", there must be something similar in English (or Danish) too, it's too common wisdom.
