If you would have had a look at the link I gave in my post, you would have noticed, that the common cathodes' currents cannot be sinked by Rishiraj's transistors, because they will not get enough base emitter current from the bidirectional port to fully turn-on. At a port voltage of about 0.7V less than 50µA can be delivered, according to the datasheet.
