Maybe you should attempt something smaller and less complicated.

Try a simple thing like blinking a led. Or make a running light, or read the state of switches... then try some simple serial uart-things... interface with a PC serial port

By then you will have gained some microcontroller knowledge, and can progress towards interfacing an AT-style keyboard.

You can always jump in at the deep end, but don't be suprised to get wet all over... :-)
