OK,

After a little more investiagtion I'm getting:-

mov sbuf,#'3'

gives 'f'

binary '3' is : 00110011
binary 'f' is : 01100110

looks like it's shifted a little, if I set mode 3 then I get
? = unprintable
binary '?' : 10011001

which is shifted some more....
