Please recall that I did try it both ways. I tried using a 0 as a stop bit second, because it seemed less likely but still worth a shot. Then, having run out of ideas, I posted my problem here, with the code in its current state.

I've just tried running it again, setting the ninth bit high, and got the same result. I'm sending from the chip to my PC, just to clear up any confusion.
