#139401 - nondefinitive conclusions
Responding to: ???'s previous message
I tried this "cable" I have at home and it worked like a charm... all bitrates, two stopbits (remember, the latter made that "cable" falling over immediately), this one seems to be OK.

So, time for the screwdriver job. This is definitively a different cable - the other one could be disassembled "correctly" (= had screws), this one has glued the two halfs of the shell - but this cannot hold us back, how could it (I'm the father of my two sons!). OK, here we go... a different chip. This time, it is PL2303HX, accompanied by an Intersil HIN231ECA.

So, the conclusion is not definitive. It may be that the 'HX version is flawless whereas the 'X version is flawed. But it well may be that I had a different driver installed then - for what I had on CD coming with this cable simply froze and I had to download the newest from prolific.com.tw (I don't remember where had I the driver for that one from; both computers are Win98SE). And I can also imagine other causes, all of which I cannot verify until I get hands on a 'X based "cable"...

Sorry for the "grey" news...

JW

[added] PS: I just looked at Prolific's website and it says, "PL-2303HX integrates on-chip clock generator and OTP ROM to save external crystal and EEPROM.". But, in my "cable", there IS a 12MHz crystal! - maybe that might explain the difference?
