I think this "trick" is mentioned in one of the Dallas/Maxim appnotes to their version of the chip (DS1232?)

Browsing this forum, you will also find Kai Klaas' recommendation to use a pullup on the reset line when using a 1232, so that it has a defined level even at low voltage.
